Default WJ radiator question.

My (wife's) Jeep, 2002 Wj 4.0 Laredo, sprung a leak.
Her boss looked at it to see if maybe a hose come apart or the water pump, thermostat housing gasket, failed. He thought from his hot rod knowledge that the radiator possibly cracked as he was unable to delve into the engine bay being dressed in a suit and tie.
Had it towed home.
I looked at it this morning and traced the leak to the screw on cap, driver side, facing the air cleaner housing, below the pressure cap.
Didn't know this was a "screw on" part. Was a tad loose. Unscrewed it for inspection.
Through perusing this forum as well as others to try and understand it, others have stated they had the same issue with said cap. Most have wrapped some pipe thread tape and put a slight torque on it with no further issues.
My question is this, what in the world is this threaded bung used for and is there a name for it?
Thank you.
