WJ Oil Change 5w-30 to 10w-40, 5w-40?
I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.7 liter engine. 143k I have been using Royal Purple 5w-30 since 114k. I change the oil every 5k. Between oil changes I usually have to add two quarts of oil. I have no leaks. I am thinking of changing to 10w-40. I do tow a boat. Total weight with trailer is about 800-900 lbs. I do have some lifter noise at startup.......
Is going to 10w-40 a good move?
Thanks,
Andy

We have an '04 WJ w/the standard 4.7 V8 that we purchased new in '03. It now has 112,000+ miles on it, and doesn't use any oil between oil changes. We've changed it every 3,000 miles since new, regardless of what people say about it being a waste of money. It's as quiet as when new, and still runs strong.
The standard 4.7 is supposed to use 5-w-30, while the 4.7HO calls for 10-w-30. http://www.wjjeeps.com/service/maint..._wj.htm#ENGOIL
