Default whinning noise while driving

I bought 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo. It have 260,000. The problem I have is the whining noise while driving. It starts about 25mph and the faster I go the higher pitch. Driving me nut. I try to put in neutral while driving and no change. Let of the gas pedal did not change. I went to 3 different shops and had 3 different opinion from transmition to transfer case to front end.
Driving in full time 4X4 do not make difference. The noise is there as soon as I pick up to 25mph. Does any one had that experience and what will be the solution. Thanks.

The fluids are full. The front wheel bearing are new. I will pull the front driveshaft and see if that will make the noise go away. I will check the "play" on back too. Can I pull the rear driveshaft and drive on front?.
This is my firs 4X4 and do not know much about.

I went under and check both driveshafts to transfer case. No movement at all. Try up/down and sideways. Solid. No "play".

drakan1908: I did the some thing but the noise was still there. Then I jump out ( maybe I was winning too much), but that did not change and I had to chase the truck. I finally find out that my rear end is going out.
Cotman transmition try to "take me for a ride". If I go with their opinion then I would loose betwine $800 to $1500. The lowest price for rebuilding rear end I was quote $650. I wander of how hard would be to do myself.

I jack up the rear end and try to get closer to my problem.
On both tires: moving up/down and sideways have no "play", but when I pull and push back few times I heard some clunking noise.
Any idea?

On my '97 it was the pinion bearings. But because the repair had been put off by the PO, the ring & pinion gears as well as the carrier bearings and wheel bearings had to be replaced.

If I buy from a junk yard- is there any way to test the rear end before I put into my Jeep.
Thanks.

The only way I know of is to pull the diff. cover and inspect it carefully for play and wear, and crap or metal fragments in the lube.

Default same noise

I have a 97 zj and it makes the same noise. I get up to about 25+ mph and it starts whining, except with mine, it doesnt whine when its in neutral, or 1st and 2nd gears (manually shifting it) but when i put it into drive it starts to whine. Step dad says theres a bearing that needs to be replaced in the transfer case and that its just getting noisier now. Just thought if anybody else says its the bearing or a different problem maybe

Note to Trucker. Stay away from Cottman!!!! They replaced my leaking pinion seal, overtorqued the pinion, and shattered my rear axle!! They repaired it, but I'm still having problems with it! My suggestion to you is bite the bullet, take it to Jeep and get it done right! I'm not trying to say nobody else is good, but who do you trust? Possibly a speed or performance shop?
