Just wondered what others might be getting mine is an 04 "Overland" stock with every option offered on it everything works fine. I have had it for going on 5 yrs. now and the mileage has never changed on the HO motor had 201,000 mi. when I bought it.
It runs 18-19.5 city/highway driving is this about normal for this combo, it runs excellent BTW.

I have a 2000, not Overland. I am getting 13.7 around town. Much better on the highway but I don't drive long distance at high speeds to tell you what that is.
Mine has the OD which I am sure helps on the highway. Mine just turned 139,000 no mods.

Mine is about the same as others. 19-19.5 highway. That is with me calculating it. The overhead console has always been off a little. 2002 Overland with 129,000

I used to live in Olathe and my Daughter lives in Lenexa its that KC driving.
Sounds like all were about the same, I do have the towing package with the 3.73 gears as most of the Overland packages have I think, correct me if I'm wrong.

I've always been told the 4.7 gets better mileage than the 4.0, so now I know it's true. As a comparison, I get about 16.5 to 17 highway without my lockup working and 12.5 city. When I do my newspaper route it drops to around 10.5, but that's with 250 stops in 45 miles and I'm running 3.55 gearing. I think a lot of the problem is the power demands on the engine; ie smaller engine pulling the same weight. Oh. yeah, I forgot about the weight of the papers. The only figure I just gave that is actually calculated (fuel usage/mile) is highway. The others are VIC readouts.

Dave that's very interesting I never knew that and mine is the HO motor also. I wonder what if any difference a set of 3.73 gears would make for you and the type of driving you do? 250 Sunday papers I would guess are quite heavy twice that of a daily, so you do have some weight involved.
The 4.0 in my XJ (heavy with armor, skids, bumpers, winch, recovery gear, parts) 33x12:50x15 4.56 gear highway almost 17 mpg.
Does your WJ have the D44 and D30 in it also, I think it would look for a wrecked one with a tow package. I think it would have to help you some.

Well actually my Sunday count is 375 and averaging 4 lbs/paper works out to 1500lbs! Except for braking, the jeep seems to handle it fine. No, I have the old D30/D35 setup. I'd LOVE to have 3.73 gearing, but I can't afford to spend the time and money, let along the physical labor, of making the change. I'm 70 years old and not in the best of condition with bad knees and numb fingers. Lately, my shoulders have given me some pain after doing a Sunday delivery, but that just comes with age, plus I'm a slug and don't work out.
The worst paper is the Thursday before Thanksgiving. It's always 4 parts and weighs 8 lbs or more. Then, with 3000 lbs aboard, the jeep gets sluggish. But that's only once a year, thank God. I think my MGVW is 5650 lbs and I know it's well over that. It would be around 7000 lbs for that! I usually spend $20 on fuel on a normal delivery day. Except for brake pads and tires, I haven't had any major repairs, not counting the cracked 331 head!

Yeah, my left knee is fragile and I think it all started with the Schiefer clutch in my Camaro! 2000 lbs Rev-Loc.

Small world. I used to live in Stockton, Mo. Then Colorado and now back in the big city. Yes my mileage was better in the rural areas, no stop lights and few stop signs. I to have 3.73 gears on my Overland.

I want to thank all of you for your input and time posting to my thread, I've found out some very interesting information also.
It appears that these are the confirmed mpg from the 4.7 and the HO model seem to be about the same even in the higher HP version with the extra 20-30 HP can't remember the exact amount.
One thing that surprised me was the 4.0 in a WJ had less mpg than the V-8 had (thanks Dave) for that info. Overall I've well pleased with mine in the last 5 yrs. of ownership has been very low cost wise.

Hi, i bought last week an 02 Limited wj with the 4.7. Its really clean, an old lady used to own it , it has only 112k but on the display it says that its giving only 11.2 mpg, i dont drive hard or anything like that , i dont even rev more than 2000 rpm , could be something wrong with it??
I read that there is a way to reset the computer so it starts calculating back again but im kind of new on this, my other ride it an 88 xj so i never had any of this fancy thing...
