Whats Up With The GrandCherokees Transmissions?
So i know a little bit about how the grand cherokees have all kinds of known transmission problems with problems with overdrive and seals leaking and other stuff...im always seeing gcs for sale for cheap with a toasted tranny, is this problem only certain years? or is there a simple way to fix, prevent...this i think the 42re trans are the poopy ones? idno can somebody shed some light, thanks

Mine does fine i have the 42re with 200,000 miles on it. The only problem that ive noticed here lately is the overdrive sometimes wants to kick in early.

The 42RE was the known stinkbox. It was just too light duty for the pounding the heavy ZJ put on it. I have a V-8 with the 45RH.. 208k miles. No problems.

94 on seems to be the problematic, I have a 93 auto an it gives me no issues 192k miles, all the complaints I have been reading on most every topic I find, it is the later model years.
I drove a 98 ZJ recently for a week it had the same engine and laredo package as mine but the trans is a 42re and boy is there a huge difference... horsepower, response, engage time, gas mileage, and most anything else one can think of takes a hit.
My 93 is a different beast than the 98 is for sure, it's a real smooth cruiser and does not have the same feel at all... my door panels are intact and I have u-joint shafts and axles from the factory, my paint is intact, ect. I dunno man it seems like the after the first year or two they changed things... (alot of things performance wise)
the 98 had 158k on the clock and it's ready for the boneyard !

Did the '95 V8 have the 42RE trans? Is there anything short of a trans rebuild one can do to help prevent a burned up tranny from happening?
