Exclamation What transmission will fit?

I am going to PnP tomorrow and I have done lots of research on this but I want to know from you wonderful Jeep guys what transmission will fit if I can't find a 46RH.

I believe the other Chrysler's were the A518, 44RE, and 46RE. The 44RE came in the 96-98 Grand Cherokees with the 5.2L so I am assuming it would work in my 94.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

what year is yours? 5.2 should have come with 44re. I believe, (might be mistaken) that only the 5.9 used the 46re.
They are all variations of the a518. and you need to replace it with what came out.

I have a 94 ZJ 5.2 and I believe I have a 46 RE. I have the build sheet at home, I can check it later.

OP- If you want to be able to just "swap" in another transmission, you're going to have to find another 46RH. To put an OBDII 44RE or 46RE, you're going to have to convert your entire ZJ to OBDII. That means a complete vehicle rewiring.

If you wish to do a complete/custom transmission swap, go for the NV3550, but that's a whole heck of alot of work and money.

Find a 46RH. To give you an idea of the strength that the 46RH has, most people who swap in 5.9's into ZJ's like to do it with the 93-95 ZJ's because of the 46RH. It's quite a bit stronger than the 44RE's.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that info. My pick n pull adventure was a failure they had 6 GCs total and two were V8s but both were 96s and the body's and interiors were in great condition so that right there was a bad sign. All the surrounding junkyards have none but one I have been to for my mustang ( it is a mustang junkyard) has 4. All priced at $550. The cost to rebuild my current one is around $2100. I need opinions. Wait or pay more?

I went through this dilemma in 2009 with my ZJ. Only because this was my DD did I decide to send it to a shop to have a reman'd transmission installed. I paid $2200. The shop that did it replaced that transmission 3 times after install because they neglected to reverse flush the transmission cooler, missing the stuck check ball, completely frying the "new" tranny's.

This being said, if it were mine, I don't think I could install a JY transmission without serious reservations. I couldn't stand the thought of redoing it possibly within a few months. There's no guarantee on those tranny's.

How mechanical savvy are you? Do you have friends who've rebuilt transmissions? The complete rebuild kits can be had for under $500, plus a torque converter for under $200. If you or someone that's willing to help have confidence that you can do it, it's much more cost effective to rebuild your's. The manuals giving you step by step instructions are all over the web, I've still got mine from when I debated this.

I am fairly mechanically savvy mostly with suspension work but my buddy works on engines all day and I do know a few people that do do rebuilds. I changed a fuel pump in a dodge ram and welded a frame back together to get some anger out.

I think what is wrong with it is the front pump is bad, when it was in the Jeep it would run cold but once the transmission heated up it would lock up, so my original thought was a cracked case (which it could still be) after it was out and turned by hand it turns 3/4 of the way and hits a real rough spot and then turns again.

I know the cracked case can just be sealed but I don't know if I should take the gamble and do it myself through a repair manual or take it somewhere and get the whole thing rebuilt and have a fresh transmission.

It looks like I am gonna have to get a real junk yard transmission and pay the extra money. A yard I am pretty well in with has a few grade A ones for $550 a piece so it seems like I am gonna have to pay off the credit bill and load it up again.
