what maximum wheel spacers size I can fit without problems with rubbing front tyres against fender/bumper?, 1 and 1/2 inch would be the maximum?

I think you're not getting answers because nobody is willing to commit to something they are not sure about. All I can tell you is what I have on my 00 WJ. The original aluminum wheels are 7" wide with 5.250" backspacing with 245/70R16 tires mounted on them with suspension at stock height. I recently changed to Black Star 16 X 8" steel wheels with 4.5" backspacing, still at stock height, with no rubbing. Same tires. These tires just about fill the wheelwell so that they really need a 2" lift for snowpack clearance because they have damaged the plastic liners over 3 winters because of ice buildup. One of the reasons I went with the steel wheels was because the stock wheels caused the tires to rub the lower control arms when the springs were fully compressed and the steering was at full lock, as in making a sharp turn going down a steep incline.

Personally, I have a dislike and mistrust of wheel spacers because they tend to move the vehicle's tire load outside the bearings and make them fail sooner, as well as not being as strong as they need to be. JMHO.
