Default Water pump replacement help

Hey all.

I have to replace the water pump on my 95 GC and am totally stumped. There's so much to take off to get to it and I don't even know where to begin!

Does anyone have a good how to with pics for doing this on the I6? I'm broke so I have to do it myself but I'm definitely in over my head here.

Also, beers on me if anyone local wants to help

Remove the fan and shroud, pull the serp belt off, remove the power steering pump bracket, remove the lower radiator hose, remove the heater hose that goes to the tube on the pump, loosen the tube on the water pump before removing the pump, then you can remove the pump. Clean the mating surface on the engine block of any and ALL gasket material. Use a very small amount of RTV on the new pump gasket surface after installing the heater hose tube. Then just bolt everything back in reverse order. Simple.

Remove ALL of the old gasket with a razor or knife. Can't stress that enough.

The most PITA part is removing the fan shroud. You have to remove the shroud and fan together. Make sure you break loose the fan bolts before you take off the serp belt. IMO, buy a water pump with a METAL impeller. NAPA premium works well.

I don't know how similar the little things are to a TJ, but I used this when I had to replace the water pump on my wrangler. Same engine.

Thanks for the tips and write ups, I got the parts the other day to do the pump and thermostat and am going to give it a go this week when I have a few days off. Just in case things get difficult, which they tend to do with this truck so far.

If the hoses and thermostat have some age on them, nows a good time to flush the system and get the gunk out. My 04 Grand has 150,000 so I pretty much gutted the cooling system and replaced everything. My wife drives 50miles a day so it was worth doing. The pump started going on my Grand, then I came home one night and the bottom cracked on the OE radiator, so it was over haul time....lol

I can't manage a flush at my appartment, technically I can get in hot water(lol puns) for changing my spark plugs in the parking lot let alone the water pump.

I am doing the thermostat while in there but didn't get the hoses. It only goes about 10-15 miles a week anyway so I can hopefully manage for a little longer.

Talk to you CO. Maybe you can do it at the station. Off duty, of course!

I tried, but I don't work over there so kinda a no go since I don't know the station folks.

I will be trying to network a little more for the future though, they have a sweet garage for working on the small boats!

When I was in the Navy and shore based at the NAS, we had a sweet Hobby Shop. Warm and dry place to work, lifts, rent tools, you could rent space for storage inside and outside. Working space was first come, first served but you had to be done by 9 pm or be charged for overnight storage. Outside storage was pretty reasonable so we'd use that when we went to sea for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Nice bunch of motorheads.
