That's what I got out of most that I've read. Though it appears that at least in later years it was offered as an option in the rear.

Others probably know better but that's what I've found.

Well, thanks for that info. I have one that is going to be doing alot of off roading and I want to ensure it will get thru whatever I throw at it and back home again. Lol at least I know that I have to look for a specific optioned grand for the parts. For the best chance of finding one. Otherwise I need to look for a visual cue to the axle casing and idk if there is any.

94 said 3.73s are the Vari-loks, if that's the case then iirc the ratio is stamped into the plates around the rear cover. Could be wrong! My memory is *horrible* so always look everything I say up

Vari-loc for the D30 was available for all WJs, but the D35 and D44a was Trac-loc until 02, then they were Vari-loc. Vari-loc came standard on all Quadra-Drive WJs.

The Vari-loc unit is a hydro-mechanical locker that functions similar to the viscous clutch in the old np249 t/case. They are not serviceable and must be replace as a unit. The axle shafts are longer than the regular ones.

To make matters more confusing, until 99 Trac-Loc was only available for 2wd models.

Check out 4wd systems at wjjeeps.com
