The 4.7 can have timing chain problems,Valves dropping in the engine and head gaskets but most of those problems are from being driven hard with no maintenance. The inline 6 99-mid 02 years got a cylinder head that can crack but jeep replaced a lot of them when this happened. The tupy head is the upgraded one and this will show you the difference in them http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/t...1-head-977498/

I currently own 2 2002's . One is a v-8 the other is a six. Never had a problem with either one. If you want power get the v-8. I daily drive the 4.0 and love it.

I have a 04 WJ an Overland edition with the 4.7HO V-8 in it. When I bought it going on 6 yrs ago it had just over 200,000 mi. on it a one owner with every option on it for that model year. Since buying it I did a tune-up on it the week I bought it and changed all fluids. I have put about 28,000 mi on it and not done a single thing to it and every option works.

I would not think twice about buying another 02-04 WJ with a 4.7HO engine I DD it and toe my XJ on a trailer with it lots of power and comfort for all.

I have had my 2002 4.7HO Overland for over two years, just the amazing V8 noise is enough for me to say you gotta try one, it really is pretty rapid and can be really quick off the mark as well.

Right you are mine with a foot in it leaves black tire marks even on the 1-2 shift with all 4 tires every time, amazing for something so heavy.

I also happen to own one of each. My 4.7 has 219,000 on it and still runs like new and is the daily. Power difference, that's honestly hard to compare, my 4.0, 180,000, will smoke the mud tires on it. My 4.7, not so much. I know most v8 gc we're awd but mine is 2 and 4 wheel. I've had two of each, one v8 being awd, the current one isn't. The 4.7 has a stack of maintenance records while the 4.0 doesn't. it does have great passing power and I use it to tow my L6 Jeep on a Dolly. They're both great in my opinion.
