I have a 96 Grand Cherokee that the transmission quit pulling on me all but reverse. Ok my question is, will a Ford AOD bolt to the 4 liter inline 6? I have researched it and some say yes and some say no.

Welcome to the forum. There is more involved in doing a swap like that than just bolting it to the engine, you will need different transmission mounts and crossmember, the transfer case may or may not bolt up, so you would need an adapter, then if the transmission is a different length you may need to have your driveshafts changed. Then when all of that's done it would take some creative wiring to get the transmission to talk to the computer so it would shift right. A cheaper option would be to have a local transmission shop look at the one you have now and fix whatever is wrong with it.

I could not have said it better. What this man is telling you is a fact. Even swapping in an AW4 from a Cherokee will cause problems with getting the electrical signals necessary to make it shift right or the rest of the systems to deal with it. You'd be time and money ahead to just rebuild your 42re.

Welcome to the forum.
This topic shows my 46RH rebuild. It is similar to your 42RE transmission.
Get the FSM for your vehicle. It is a required tool. The transmission section is complete and has all the information required to resolve the problem.
