transmission questions
Hey Everyone,
Im new to this forum as of today. I have a 96 grand cherokee laredo 4x4 stock components. It has a little over 200k miles and the transmission is about to reach its final leg. Its slipping, always getting stuck between gears, lost all power, etc. Well I have two options but I am not sure which is best. If someone could help me out that would be great! Im looking for the cheapest way to get a better transmission.
Option 1: Take the jeep to a shop and rebuild the transmission. I got a couple quotes of $1200-$1500. This seems pricey to me. Is it reasonable? If not whats a reasonable price?
Option 2: Buy a new transmission and install the transmission myself. If I choose this route whats a good average price on a new transmission?
Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you guys!

$1200-$1500 is not a bad deal for removing, rebuilding, then installing the transmission. A reman will cost you about the same, then you have to crawl around on the ground and get dirty. Option 1 all the way!

For $1500 you could probably (someone correct me if need be) swap in a 350/700R4. Especially if you sell the 4.0 and stock bad trans. If either of mine go that's exactly what I would do.

Come on guys work on your own jeep; thats how you learn. My trans went out @ 198000, i pulled it out with the transfer case attached went to the junkyard looked for a low mileage jeep 1994 grand cherokee 4x4 brought it back home put it in and now i'm back on he road. Trans cost $350.00 and i have the satifaction of knowing it was done right.
