Transmission Problem 96 Cherokee County
Automatic transmission in 96 Jeep Cherokee occasionally acts as if it shifts into neutral on its own -although still in Drive on gearshift. Pressing accelerator is just as if transmission is in neutral - RPM goes up but no power delivered. Pulling off the road, shutting down engine, then restarting makes the problem go away. A couple of times downshifting into 3rd while moving then back to drive solved the problem.
Had the problem about a 2 years and changed the transmission fluid and the problem went away for a while. Any suggestions?

Frank - thanks for the reply. Check engine light not on so I have not checked for error codes. Should I do this?
Fluid looks good and 156000 miles on transmission.
