Default Transmission over temp message help

2006 4.7 WK just got a message for the first time "transmission over temp" in dash/evac. I stopped to go into a store and check the tranny oil temp and it was in the hot zone on the stick.

2 nights ago I tried to boost a friend's car and had it charging his battery for around 10 minutes.*

Any ideas? Some say corrosion around starter wires/connectors, others change their starters and others have their computers rebooted and updated.

Okay, here goes my opinion. Long periods of idling should be done in neutral so the pump can circulate and cool the fluid. Idling in park can cause the fluid to build up heat quickly.

The torque converter has 3 components inside it; a turbine driven by the engine, a stator that directs the flow of the fluid, and the driven turbine that is attached to the trans input shaft. Even though it's not driving the trans, the engine turbine is pumping fluid thru the stator, building up heat, and it's not being cooled because there is no flow thru the cooler.

In Mopar transmissions, the pump doesn't make pressure in park. In GM trannys, the pump is on-line all the time, and IDK about Fords. This is why jeep's tranny fluid level has to be checked in neutral.

Thx, I also had a new water pump installed last month, I bought the cardone cheapest one on rockauto.

And the night before I boosted a friends car and had it connected for around 10 minutes.

Should I just check the transmission fluid or in going for a service at the dealer should I tell them to check something?

Just check the fluid for being dark or smelling burnt, top it off, and watch for it happening again.

It comes on every time now, especially if I drive it for too long or on the highway after 10 miles it will show up.
Deaelr said it's nothing, I have to go meet the transmission guy there tomorrow morning. It's as if it's stuck in 3rd or 4th gear, it revs at 1500 rpm which is ok, but louder than usual drive noise at 100kmh. It may need a CPU restart I say because ever since the heavy boost I gave the day before this started, may have caused or drained some electrical crap. Fix your electrcical crap Jeep lol, if you want me to buy a new Cherokee in 5 years.

Sounds like something burned up or got wiped out during the boost. Probably getting a false trans over temp signal. Is your fan coming on as well? Sounds like the trans over temp signal has sent you into limp mode being that you feel like its stuck in 3rd or 4th. I would guess something is funky with the TCM. Could be that a re-set and re-flash of the TCM will solve this issue.

In the later years ('99 and beyond), there is no TCM. It's part of the PCM. I understand there still is a BCM though. Someday they'll install a main-frame to control everything. Even the driver, as in lane warning, collision avoidance, and auto braking. I'd like it to just let ME drive!

PCM, TCM, TSM, ECU, OMG, LOL........I hear ya Dave, to go back to the days of carburetors, no catalytic converters and the only components on the transmission were neutral safety switches and vac modulators. Now we live in times where acronyms rule and computers control everything.

The problem, Fish, is that computer controlled fuel injection works very well, IF it continues to function. Where we get into major problems is everything else needs to be monitored and controlled to meet EPA emission standards.

The dealer tells me they performed some cooler line flush, it may have fixed the issue, if I get it again it will need a tranny valve cleanup, which I don't feel like doing. I spoke to the transmission specialist over the phone a few times and mentioned to him all the possibilities that were discussed here and it helped.. The noise I mentioned is coming from the 2 front wheel bearings, not from a supposedly stuck 4th gear, they twice took it for a test drive.. No codes showed up or found either.

*

I will have to fix the wheel bearings now. I'm not sure how this happened at the same time, it feels like the right wheel bearing makes more noise, I remember going off a nasty pothole or some **** on the street a few nights ago...Can I can get the parts from rock auto, or are these guys going to pull a fit if I come with those? I wish I had a full warranty.

*

I drove home from the dealership and did not get a message, which is good news too.

If you want my opinion, rockauto sells Timken, which I have used for more years than you've been alive. As far as I'm concerned, you can't get better bearings. I've used them in the front of my ZJ and both ends of my WJ. Timken has made industrial bearings for over 100 years. I've never had a bad one out of the box.

Hi Dave, do you think I can take my own Tinken bearings and go to a chain store garage and have them install them? Or the dealer will have more specific ways of installing them?

These are the parts I would need to do a Valve Body job as next resort if the Transmission Over Temp comes back on:

RL166834-AK VALVE BODY, VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY. Transfer Plate and Valve. .

RL166834AD. Chrysler. VALVE BODY, VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY. Transfer Plate and Valve.

*05013470-AD FILTER, FILTER PACKAGE, SUMP FILTER KIT, SUMP FILTER PACKAGE. Transmission Oil. .

FILTER, FILTER PACKAGE, SUMP FILTER KIT, SUMP FILTER PACKAGE. Transmission Oil. DODGE RAM 2500 (1999 - 2013) # 05013470AD

*Does this make sense to anyone? Why would this happen...

I've been getting the transmission over temp message ever since I gave someone a long boost on his dead battery....

I brought it to the dealer and we tried unblocking some tranny cooler lines I had changed a couple of months ago to see if it was the problem...The message stopped appearing for 2 weeks.

Than I had my battery recharged because my jeep would not start a days later...

Than yesterday I got the message back, the tranny fluid is not overheating and was also changed 1-2 years ago.

I will check all that was said on this thread, if anyone has any extra information, please let me know. thx
