Default Transmission Issue

Ok so I just bought a '95 GC with the 5.2L. When I bought it I knew the trans fluid was burnt and it would hardly move in drive, but moved better in reverse. I got it home (trailered it home) and did fluid and filter change on the trans. Just got a chance to drive it today. At first it went into reverse and drive fine. Drove it not more than 5-10 min. not going over maybe 10 mph. After this amount of driving it didn't want to move in drive but would move fine in reverse. Check of the fluid showed proper level and color, but smelled burnt. Thinking the burnt smell may be from the fluid that did not drain out of torque converter and pump.

Did not try manually shifting into 1st gear or any of the other gears. It almost seems like it is going into drive and reverse at same time.

Forgot to mention it has the 46RH trans.

The forward clutches are toasted, there is no magic fluid that will fix it, it's time for a rebuild or replacement. Shop around and see what is the least expensive route. You can gamble and put a junkyard transmission in it.

I have a '97 GC with a 4.0L in it. Going to check the tranny see if I can swap the trans also. Was going to do a transfer case swap from the '97.

The transmission from a 4.0 won't bolt up to the 5.2.

Does anyone know of a good video or reference for rebuilding a 46RH tranny? I have the basic knowledge of how to do it but looking for the specifics of it.

Search YouTube and have a factory service manual with you.

OK so I've decided to do the rebuild on this transmission. The one question I have is should I also consider replacing the torque converter? I have done a bunch of reading on doing this rebuild and some have mentioned to replace the converter also.

It would be stupid not to replace the torque converter when you rebuild the transmission. A lot of crap builds up in the converter and you can never get it out without cutting it in half. A reman converter is not that much money.
