My Jeep passed a whole inspection with no problems except for a tranny cooler line leak which I've been told about by other mechanics who have checked under the Jeep for a while now... But have said it's nothing serious but should be fixed at some point...

I'm going on a long road trip in July-August...Dealer wants 700$ (About 100$ parts, the rest in labor to fix it)...

What would you do?

"the cheaper way to go is cut the line up by the radiator with a tubing cutter and on the transmission. leave about a inch of line left by the radiator and the transmission. get some 3/8 gas hose and 2 small screw clamps. rubber will be cheaper then metal. if you use metal you will have to use your fittings and flare both ends on the line."

Is the hard part of the line leaking, or the rubber part of the line? In the past I have cut the aluminum crimped clamps off the the rubber hose and replaced the hose and used regular hose clamps, no problems.

 

On my ZJ, there was an O-ring in a quick disconnect fitting for the aux cooler that was leaking. I couldn't get it apart, so I just cut out that section of solid line and used hose and clamps. There is about 40 psi pressure in those lines, so they must be clamped well. It's best to slightly flare the ends of the pipes so the hose won't pop off.

I can't think of much worse than loosing all your trans fluid on the interstate!

 

Do you guys know how high the pressure is on a 2006 jeep grand Cherokees 4.7 transmission cooler lines? Thx

I went under the Jeep and all I see is the part located where the number 1's left line on the middle picture is here: http://goo.gl/ZIyXW The line is like covered in hard - soft slime. But has been like that ever since I bought this Jeep in 2010... 30000 miles ago.. How do I know if it's leaking from the rubber hose, I can't even see it? ANd there is nothing, not even a drop on the pavement.

Please tell me the best way to fix it:

1) Do I bring it to the dealer and get butt raped for 700$?

2) Do I buy the parts from the dealer (100$) and have my cousin fix it at his garage?

3) Do I fix it he el cheapo way, but only if it's reliable? How long would that take?

The "right" way is to just get a complete new cooler line from the dealer or have a shop fab one for you, and you could install it yourself with normal hand tools.

If you want a cheap fix that will work almost as well, find out where the rubber hose is damaged, cut the damaged part off, then use a couple of brass hose barb fittings screwed together, and clamp them to the existing hose using worm-gear style hose clamps.
