Transmission clunk

Default Transmission clunk

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4.7 V-8, trailer towing package and limited slip differential.

After my Jeep is thoroughly warmed up, I notice a transmission clunk when I'm coming to a stop. It occurs at 15 mph as the trans is downshifting. It's intermittent and doesn't always happen. Of course, when I took it to the dealer they couldn't duplicate the clunk, but it's still there.

Does anyone have a diagnosis ???

thats a little vague...are you positive it's the tranny or do you just have a "clunk" while slowing down

I'm fairly certain it's coming from the trans. It only happens after the car is warmed up. It occurs when the car is slowing down and going through a downshift cycle, right at 15 mph.

Anything further on this?

I have a similar problem but mine seems to be right around 3-5 mph from a start or when nearly completely slowed down around 2-5 mph. Does not seem to be there when the Jeep is cold, but more prevalent once fully warmed up.

I really need to change all the fluids (TC, diffs, and AT) first though. Previous owner towed a boat (everything could be dry!).

I see your point but it was a different transmission (XJ 4.0 vs YJ 4.7 right?). That, and I know my car was a previous ONE owner... all the way up to 158,000 miles when I bought it. The car was pretty well taken care of (rust-proofed) with a just about to expire oil change tag. It had a couple of smaller issues, but nothing major. Also, the car has almost no rust (rare in ohio for a vehicle with that kind of miles), and the interior was mint saddle (tan option with black) with nothing broken (save for worn out hatch struts). Towing package too.

I guess I'd be taking a chance of changing the transmission fluid. Probably 50/50 that it was up to date. I'd like to have faith in the PO... but I know most people get let down by their PO's.

My brothers '04 WJ had a very similar noise that was hard to diagnose. Turns out the dealer replaced the entire rear drive-shaft under warranty because the slip-yoke was binding in the t-case when braking to a stop. True story.

I have the same Issue with my 99' XJ. 3-5 when taking off and 2-3 when stopping, I do pull a trailer all the time in the summer and plow snow in the winter. So far the only thing I have been told is there is some play in the rear diff/u-joints... Not sure if thats true though...

Funny enough... I haven't noticed the noice recently? I guess it comes and goes. I've only had the vehicle for 2 months though, so we'll see how the repairs and troubleshooting pan out.
