transmission
Hi I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee 4wd v8. And a 1997 grand cherokee Laredo also 4wd and v8. I was wondering if the trans out of the 94 would work in the 97. Please help ive tried looking it up and asking different techs but get a slue of different answers.

The '94 has a 46RH transmission. The '97 has a 44RE transmision. The 46RH has a higher rating. The 46RH is hydraulic shifting, the 44RE is electronic. The shifting is internal to the transmission.
Both were built w/ the same NP249 transfer case.
They should bolt up correctly to the engine and transfer case. They should connect properly to the throttle and shift cables. They should connect fine to the transmission cooler.
This link has information on the different model years.

One is for the overdrive, the other is for the lockup. There is a three-pin electrical connector from the valve body through the transmission case to the vehicle harness for these solenoids.

The 46RE also has an internal transmission fluid temperature sensor and an internal governor pressure sensor.
The electrical connector from the transmission interior to the vehicle wiring harness has more pins on the 46RE than the 46RH, eight versus three pins.
The 46RE also has an additional exterior connector for the output speed sensor.
The vehicle's powertrain control module is different for the two different transmissions.
The exterior Park / Neutral switch connector appears identical.
Use the correct transmission.
