transfer case stuck in 4x4
I have tried to search the forums for an answer and have not found one. It may be there but I can't find it.
I have a 97 grand cherokee with the 242 selec trac transfer I think. It is a 4.0 with 2wd, 4wd part time, full time, and 4 low. Recently I had an issue with not getting it to shift into 2wd, but I could get under the vehicle and push the rod directly connected to the transfer all the way into 2wd. Now it just started not lettling me do that anymore so I had to put it in full time so it isn't in part time, just to be able to drive home. I haven't checked the fluid yet, but I have not seen any leaks, and a few years ago it was full. Let's say for argument sake it is full of fluid, what could the problem be? Is there something inside that may need replaced? It doesn't make any noise that I can hear, and works just fine other than not going into 2wd. I would have thought it was a linkage issue, but now not being able to get it into 2wd drive even from underneath has me wondering.

Old fart with a wrench
It may be the linkage inside the case. There may be a shift fork loose or broken.

I have had 4 xj's with the 242 t case abd i always have had to rock it between R/D to get the case to set fully in 2wd. It also seems to work best in loose gravel or wet dirt. Also what up with the ((a few yrs ago it was full)) thats neglect you should be ashamed haha
