i got a 95 with a 4.0 and the transfer case is going bad it has the alltime 4wd one and from what i read on sites thats not a good one. so what is the better transfer case to get for this jeep? also how do you identify it? are all years interchangeable? and can i get one off a regular cherokee or other jeeps? thanks.

should help you. From my experience you can do a swap with minimal work. I got a 1993 ZJ has the NP 242 bolted up to a AW4...got a NP 231 from the same year with the same tranny and all I had to do was swap the engine harness (so it has the right sensor connectors). The way to tell what T/C you got get under the vehicle, look at the back-end left side of the T/C and you'll see a round aluminum tag...It'll say something like NP242, NP231, or NP249. Sometimes they'll have a "J" at the end.

 

YOu can put an NP231 in it. Maybe Nick will reply as I think he did that. As for compatibility not really sure off hand other then the spline count must be the same. You may also be able to stick an NP242 in it. To identify them they have a tag/plate on them that will tell you what they are.
