Default transfer case inspection

Is there any way to check a used t-case. Mine is on it's last leg
and I found another at a salvage yard for $200.
It's a 242 select-trac. Yard is offering a 30 day warranty, but if I
open it up to inspect, warranty is void.

thanks, Larry

Look at any fluid that may still be in it and see if there is any metal or discoloration.

look at the tag on your t-case.

Now, that I've gotten another t-case, what fluid do I use?
One place says regular Dextron another says ATF4?

There will be a round aluminum tag that is silver and red with numbers and letters like NP231J, that will be the model number you have.
