read a few articles about transfer cases. I have a 247 thats gone bad on my 99 JGCL auto transmission and id like to know what other TC's are interchangable.

NP231 or an NP242 will almost be a direct bolt it. You have to look at the input spline count and lenth of the old case to be sure it matches the one you want to swap in. The NP231 has the most aftermarket support of the two cases listed.

im guessing in order to determine the spline count I hae to pull the TC? when you say almost a direct bolt in swap linkages only?

Somebody around here may have the spline count for you so you don't have to pull the old one out. The linkage off of your old case may even work on the NP231.

Check out the local boneyard for an NP231 linkage. I bet it would not cost more than 5 bucks.

Typical 231 will work. If you wanted an upgrade a dana 300 will work with a flip kit or a 241J off a rubicon will work if you wanted 4:1, but both of these would require a good amount of work to setup correctly.

i was just looking to fix the problem (bad TC). a 247j which is what I have is 600 at the junkyard my local u pull it has a few different TC's at $50 just looking to see whats going to fit the best so I can make a decision. That link looks great ZJdriver I'll read that over and see what I come up with. Replacing the TC to me isn't an issue I just need the info to make a good decision. If i could find a 247J id get that but im not dropping 6 bills on a 99 JGCL with 195K miles on it.

In the same boat, been looking for a replacement transfer case for my 2000 wj 4.7 with the 247. The ones I have found have been high miles and a high price. $500-800 for something with 195K miles is ridiculous. But I have found a couple newer"2002-2004" 247 wondering if those might work.
Also not trying to high jack your thread.
