Default Tranny Band Adjustment

I have the pan off my 42RE tranny (2003 Grand Cherokee 6 Cyl Auto) and plan to: do a filter change first, re-attach the pan, replace the 4 quarts, then use 8-9 more quarts and do a power flush (out the supply line that leads into the radiator). Anyway, I notice a lot of chatter about 'adjusting' the bands and wondered if I should perform this while I'm snoopin' around in there. Is there a video or source that I can view before sewing up the patient? Opinions welcome.

As long as it's shifting and functioning correctly don't mess with it.

I agree totally. My 2000 has 190K miles on it and the bands have never been adjusted. It shifts solidly whenever it needs to.

Thank you and I should have added more to the original post but didn't want to muddy the waters. My Cherokee tranny quit the other day. Reverse was fine but after a 2 mile journey the the forward gear (band?) began slipping then totally quit. I had to back it up my final mile to get home. The vehicle had been sitting all day so the oil never had time to overheat so that shouldn't be the problem. It began slipping as soon as it began to move and got progressively worse until it failed (in about 2 miles). The Jeep has over 200K on it and I planned to junk it rather than fix it. However, 24 hours after it was parked, it decided to drive again as though everything is back to normal. I simply don't trust it now and don't want to venture out the driveway until I try to fix it. I don't like changing oil after this many miles but the alternative is the boneyard so it's worth the gamble. I only asked about checking and/or adjusting the bands because it likely won't hurt at this stage in the game since the alternative is the scrap heap. Bands 'supposedly' should be adjusted periodically although I'm not a fan of that either because in my experience when a tranny slips it's usually fini. My quandry is that it was perfect everyday for 200K miles with no slipping at all then kaboom ... total failure. Then miraculously, it's back again. There is some fine metal residue clinging to the magnet in the pan but no major chunks indicating a catasrophic failure. The linkage appeared normal immediately after the incident and the fluid level was full and appeared red/pink. I don't want to over tighten the bands but if it's a matter of loosening a lock nut and making a specific tension or other specific adjustment, I may as well give it a whirl before putting the pan back on. Therefore, if anyone has a reference to a video or article it would be greatly appreciative.
