I have a 97 Grand Cherokee Limited with stock wheels and worn 225 70 16 tires.

Are there any concerns with the AWD or 4WD systems if I decided to go with a smaller 15" tire/wheel? Would I realize any performance differences such as improved fuel mileage?

 

Some GCs came with 15s from the factory and some came with 16s. I don't think you will notice any differences.

 

True. And even though all Limiteds came with 16"s, your truck won't care whether it's wearing 225x75x15's or 245x70x16's, as long as they're all the same size. IMO

Just be aware they sometimes use 16" wheels for brake clearance.

 

On the ZJs the Limiteds came with 16s for a better look. The rotor and caliper assembly is the same from the Laredos that came with 15s whether or not it has the I6 or the V8. Also, most people go to a 15" steel wheel when they lift their ZJs. D windows or Soft 8s are the most common. Easier and cheaper to find tires! I'm in that dilemma now.

Well after searching online I decided to cancel the Toyo's and go with BF Goodrich All Terrain Radial T/O's. I'm VERY glad I made this decision because I saw the Toyo's on my buddies truck and they are definitely NOT what I was looking for. Les Schwab kept telling me the Toyo was a very capable on/off road tire but looks strictly like a highway tire to me. I'm very relieved because not only did I get a better tire I saved $200.

 

you really want to try to keep to the same circumference tho.
so try something like 225-75-15.

the 225 is the width in millimeters, the 75 is the height of the sidewall in percentage of the width, and of course the 15 is the rim size.

your stock size is 225/25x(.70x2)+16=28.6
so 225/25x(.75x2)+15= 28.5

 

Thanks for the heads up but I just stuck with the stock tire size, would have had to replace my spare if I went with a different size and didn't feel like spending another $150 just so my spare matched.

Lol my 1996 Limited 5.2 still has the small spare tire. Never had the recall done on it! There are still three open recalls on it. The Shifter detent, spare tire, and power seat.

I have the original window sticker and it has the full sized spare listed as a $160 option.

 

FYI the www.tirerack.com has some very useful pages if U dig around. They have a great survey function for the tires in tje catagory you are looking for. Also lots of reviews and tests. No need to take advice from one guy at Les S who just wants to sell a tire.
