First of all, I'd like to say hello to all of you out there seeing as this is my first post. Second, i could use a little help. I just bought a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee for $300. My problem lies in the transmission laying in the back of it. Its equipped with a 4.0 5 speed manual and 4wd. The previous owner got rid of it because he couldnt find a throwout bearing to match the transmission. His problem was that the parts house couldnt find one that didnt include an internal slave cylinder. Where might i start?

I don't know about grands. But do your research. The two jeeps I have had to replace are a one piece slave unit. If u determine it has a throwout and not a slave. I suggest the bone yard if your parts house can't get it. Try the dealer too

as far as i know, the only manual transmission to be used in the zj jeep grand cherokee was the AX15.
tell them you want a release or throwout bearing for an external slave.
they are probably looking up a yj bearing for 93. those were internal slave.
93-96 zj used the external slave bearing sleeve. same as the tj.

Well i went to O'reilly's today. The only thing they could find for a 93 grand cherokee was what the previous owner left sitting in the passenger seat, an internal slave unit. I'm going to check other stores that just happened to be the only one on the way home from work.

I worked with a kid in a repair shop, had a clutch job to do. When he had a problem with it he asked for my help. I asked him if he put in the throw out bearing. He said "No, I followed the directions. It said throw out so that's what I did." Now, I have to wonder if the previous owner was the same guy? haha!

I'm not certain what year off the top of my head, but on the XJ (or maybe it was the YJ?) they eventually went to an external slave on the AX-15. I would spend a little time Googling for when that changed over and order one for that year. The manual ZJ was so uncommon that it doesn't surprise me that parts stores would have a hard time finding the right part, but the part from a XJ or YJ should cross over.

I found some information on people that swapped from internal to external slaves on 93 models and I'm thinkin that's what happened to this one. I found my throwout bearing I need and ill be getting it as soon as I get off work tomortow. Got to love payday.

Why is that? I'm 19 and this is my second jeep. I owned a yj before and it was my 1st vehicle wen i was 15 but i ended up having to sell it. i regret it but cant change it now. My technical know how is limited to the basic things I've done myself, brakes spark plugs, ect. and I'd certainly like to learn.

Because if the slave ever goes bad, you don't have to drop the trans to replace it. You're doing well for a 19 year old. Keep it up and you'll just keep growing in your knowledge as your skill increases and fear decreases. It's how most of us got our start in wrenching.

I don't know everything that's involved, but it's a common thing to do so you could just Google it and start reading on different forums ("jeep internal to external slave cylinder conversion" should get you started in the right direction). I think they went external around 94-95 and you might need the bellhousing for that setup, but I'm not certain. Of course you would need the new slave cylinder, but you would also need the pushrod and bearing fork, maybe some other things too. If I had an internal that worked fine I wouldn't mess with it, but if my clutch or slave cylinder went bad or I had any other reason to drop the transmission, I would convert.
