Default T-249 Tcase & Front and rear differential failures

I just recently removed my 2 front axleshafts/front driveshaft, along with getting the diff., on my ZJ 1993 Jeep grand cherokee Laredo 330000 miles. Relatively how likely is it for the rear differential ext. to also be completely done for?

Depends on how well it was maintained, if they stay full of clean gear oil they can last the life of the vehicle.

Default probably not very well

I got it at about 280,0000 miles so I think most likely hasn't been maintained like it should be considering how most people are nowadays. I just assumed the power ratio was distributed out unevenly so I didn't know how that would relate to wear and tear.

Welcome to the forum.

Note that those early NP249 transfer cases required operation w/ all drive shafts and with all four tires having identical outside diameters (even tread on all four matching tires).

When operated outside those requirements then the internal viscous coupler will fail, requiring replacement. A failed VC will cause tire chirping when turning on dry pavement.

Thanks for the info yeah have recently done my fair share of research vicious coupler Considering I I did not know absolutely anything about transferring Up until now. I just realized that everything I heard about you needing to keep an axleshaft in after removing the driveshaft was true. Luckily I noticed it in time and checked it In order to at least make it to my house. Now I'm just trying to figure out How exactly to leave the axle shafts in there With a differential removed because the diff is completely done.

You have to put an axle stub in a hub.

Default Thanks dude

I appreciate it and most likely when the time does come around to replacing the differential I will just have to get a new axle shaft?
