Starter or Solenoid
I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. I had to have it jump started a few times. I bought a new battery. Started fine for a few days, then last night I went to the gas station. It wouldn't start. Dash lights came on, ignition dinged, etc but no crank. I had it jump started. Fires right up.
This morning same thing. I had the alternator checked, it checks out ok. The only other thing I can think of is the starter. This is DEJAVU, I have a 93 Cherokee as well. I've heard you can't jump start a vehicle with a bad starter but I don't believe this to be true. I jumped the 93 and it had a bad starter. I believe the starter and solenoid are one unit. Am I on the right track?

Here's a few things you can check;
Main starter supply wire from the battery and connections
Ignition switch
Neutral safety switch
Wiring to these devises
Worn starter brushes.
Sticky solenoid

What voltage is measured on the battery terminals using a DVM when the engine is running at a high idle of about 1,400 rpm?

I replaced the starter and the starter relay. I had to get a jump start. I let car sit and idle. I drove it a couple blocks, it ran fine. I shut it off. Started right back up. Went out 15 minutes later, tried to start it I heard a few clicks no lights, no radio. I tried again and it's complete silence. I put my key in the passenger door and rear latch to reset the security system thinking that might it. Nope.

My advise is to take the battery out, get it fully charged, then load tested. I just went thru this! The battery showed it was fully charged but only pulled the rated load for 10 seconds! It was only 2 years old!

hit the key and a few clicks ? Sounds like either the battery connections or the battery is dead. Probe the post of the batery for 12.6v fully charged, then move on down the + cable checking voltage...
