Starter problem

Default Starter problem

I have a 1996 jeep when I try to start it all it will do is click once could it be the solenoid?

Could be, but check the battery first.

tap the starter repeatedly while someone else tries to start it!

We already checked the battery.
I will try tapping the starter this afternoon when I get home from work to see if that will work.

If it starts the solenoid is bad. Replace the starter!

Your local auto parts store should be able to test your starter, if you suspect that is your problem. (its free here & easy to do) I had the same symptoms you described & traced my problem to the power wire ( from battery to starter) It was old (& corroded internally??) just wasnt getting enough amperage to the starter. $6.50 nice. also your solenoid is part of your starter & will be checked w/ the starter. Just went to buy a battery and starter it was 272.97 can't wait to put it on after work and get my jeep back on the road.

I got the new starter and battery on my jeep and cleaned the throttle body and so far its running great. Thanks for all the help.
