Sputtering on left turn
Good Morning,
I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that sputters out when taking left turns. I installed a new fuel pump and the check engine light came on for p1494 which is the leak detection pump sw. After driving the jeep about 1000 miles with the new fuel pump it starts doing the same thing and right when it happened the check engine light turned off. Occasionally it will start up and the check engine light will be on but after a few left turns it will sputter again and the light will turn off. Anybody have a similar problem?

You may have a crack in a vacuum elbow that supplies vacuum to the Leak Detection Pump. If this is a 4.0, they are on the side of the intake manifold below the throttle body. They are hard plastic lines with rubber elbows that tend to crack over time. The easiest fix is to use rubber hose to replace the elbows.
Also, check your motor mounts.

No, I would suspect there's a wire shorting out on something on the steering linkage or steering column. It's odd that it would only do it turning left. The backfire would be caused by a brief loss of ignition and then getting it back or a sudden lean fuel condition. This is backed up by the fact that you only had a stutter before you messed with something on that side.

Huh....Just for jollies, check the wires coming out of the back of the fuel pump plug. You may have a broken wire inside the plug that's making contact "sort of."
The fuel pump relay and the ASD relay are controlled by the PCM. The ASD relay controls the ignition and fuel injector circuits. Any time the PCM decides something's wrong, it shuts off both relays. You should probably check the fuel pressure when it's running and after it dies. With a gauge. You can rent a gauge at Autozone. The fuel pressure regulator is inside the filter on the WJ.

I had to. It was just hanging right out there.
I'd go with you, a loose or chaffing wire, even a spark plug wire..Maybe couple that with a bad motor mount.

I was about to offer this as well. Great ideas. Often when the issues seem to be the wildest symptoms, sometimes unrelated to whatever you have been working on, the best troubleshooting is to start with the basics. Suck bang blow. Then check wiring connections. clean and replace your ground points. Its amazing how many issue are caused by a bad ground. Good Luck OP

Well, to tell you the truth, this one has me unhinged. I consider myself a pretty good diagnostician and think out of the box all the time. I'm still working on it, but not having eyes on it is a real handicap! Staring at my own WJ hasn't provided any incite either. Why just left turns? Even the power steering hose flexes on both left and right turns.
Maybe it's something inside the cabin?
