Does anyone know what size the nut is on a front shock on a 1996 Grand Cherokee 5.2 Limited?

 

On an 02 GC the top is a 15mm and I think the bottom is 13mm and the shaft hex on the top is either a 6 or 7mm

 

What is it for a 2000 WJ? My front shocks have come loose. I am not sure how I will get the rusted nuts off. I hit it with some PB Blaster yesterday. I may have to cut it off but there isn't a lot of room to work, especially on the driver side..

 

Hold the piston rod underneath with vise grips or channel locks and use an impact wrench, unless you plan on using it again.

 

I do. From what I can tell the shocks are good. Either they were installed incorrectly, they both loosened up or the rubber grommet on both shrunk over time. They are both loose , on the top. There is play between the grommet and the seat where they bolt down in the engine compartment. No play if I grab the shock itself and try and move it. Unless its supposed to be that way. Weird that they are both the same. Was planning just to split the nut with a Dremmel cutting tool, get new rubber spacers/grommets and tighten it down.

 

Yup, that'll work. I was going to suggest a nut cracker but wasn't sure there was enough room. Just be sure you use a grade 8 nut when you replace it.

 

Yup. My second or third thought was nut cracker. It's really tight. I bought that Dremmel years ago for a project and wound up not needing it. Since I already spent the money and didn't miss it, I kept it. I keep forgetting I have it. Should work just fine. Thanks for the reminded about the nut.

 

I've used my Dremel for so many things I've lost count. I used it to cut the trapdoor in my headlight housing to replace the fan relay. I've used it to cut muffler clamps off as well.
