Default shifting problems...

Hey guys I am new to Cherokee Forum and I could really use some help on my new problem. I have a 1993 Grand Cherokee with an automatic transmission and recently it has started giving me problems when shifting. On the freeway getting up to speed I will reach 2000 RPM's by the time I hit 30 mph... and by the time I reach 70 mph the RPM's are to a little over 3500 which I know cannot be right. Please Help!!

You're not going into overdrive for some reason.

So it has nothing to do with the throttle sensor or the sensor on the transmission itself?

Check the tranny on a level surface with the Jeep in Neutral to see if it's low on tranny fluid.

If the check engine light is on pull the code. If the fluid is up to level but it hasn't been changed in a while, you may want to have the tranny flushed and toss a new filter in it.

If there's debris floating around in that fluid it could be hanging up the transmission.

Hey Tony thanks for that advice, Last night I checked all the fluids and everything was filled up and the fluid looked brand new since it had been changed about a month ago. This morning I ran down to auto zone and picked up a new TPS sensor and just changed that out, however when I test drove it with the new sensor nothing had changed. I tested all the wires and the sensor is getting juice. I have no idea what to do now, do I need to disconnect the battery and reset the whole system or something along those lines? please help!!

Sounds like the tv cable is out of adjustment. Also know as the kick down cable. You can adjust that right at the throttle linkage. With the motor off check for play in the linkage.

If you have the 4.0 (you didn't give many details) the transmission won't go into overdrive until the coolant temp sensor sees a certain temp and the vehicle speed has to be 45mph or more. Also, a faulty overdrive switch can cause the overdrive not to work. I suggest taking it to a shop and having them take a look, it is better than throwing parts at the Jeep.

93 4.0 = AW4 and does that have that sensor? Mine goes in overdrive when its -20c as soon as i reach 65-70 km/h, dont see any difference if its cold or hot outside.

Adjust the TV cable.

Transmission valve cable. There should be 3 cables attached to you throttle linkage depending on if you have cruise control or not. One of those goes down to the side of you transmission. It opens a valve inside which is how the transmission shifts

The square block where I'm pointing is how you adjust it. Push down on the top and there's a slider the goes in and out. If the linkage has play is it the transmission won't shift right.

Not all 93 ZJs came with the AW4, only the models built in the first half of the year.

Good to know, the phone app does not give all of the vehicle information.
