Ok, I am pretty sure that this is an issue for a pro, but I don't get paid until the first, so I need some pointers.
First, the transmission has had a grinding/sandpaper sound to it in the lower gears or when I am stopped, but not in neutral. In neutral it runs fine.
Yesterday however, it started shifting late or not at all. It usually shifts around 2K but it has jumped to just north of 3k before it shifts (Sometimes, sometimes it is fine, sometimes it wont shift at all).
It was really bad this morning and about 11am, as I drove it home, it bucked a few times and shifted late or not at all, depending on the stop sign.
I am going to clean the Throttle body and IAC plus change out the transmission filter. Any other ideas?

while you've got the trans filter out, why not swap out the shift solenoids. they are cheap and may be the fault of your erratic shifting.
the throttle position sensor (tps) also controls some of your shifting.

So, I took the pan off and (aside from learning that my catch pan has a crack in it. Fluid went everywhere) I found a lot of metal shavings in the pan.
Question is: How much is too much. Should I install the new filter and refill the tranny? Or... do I call the Mechanic?

What is a catch pan? Im guessing its the transmission fluid pan. A crack? Its leaking has been leaking? Low fluid level when you checked it? Grinding, sandpaper sound? Doesen't sound good. Shavings in the pan are normal to some extent based on mileage. I would change the filter and fluid but not change anything else till then and see what happens. The crack is the same as a leak and will result in low fluid level and damage will insue..

you remove the pan, then just behind the governor pressure solenoid, that's the round cylinder thing that is protected by like a fence surround, you will find the shift solenoids. they have a wire connector going to each one.

not saying this is your problem, but i figured since you're in there, it wouldn't hurt.

Before you spent 70 bucks on something that may not fix it, you should be concerned about the metal shavings you found and the noise you're hearing. I think you might have a failed planetary gearset, or something of that nature.

Absolutely! Check if those particles are steel or aluminum. You've obviously have something more than solenoids wrong! In my Chevy truck, it was the pump.
