The 4.7 has problems at higher mileage... we had a 2005 WK (got rid of it back in October when it had 211k on it, had owned it since brand new) with it, so I've lived with it... it also sucks gas like crazy... you're better off with the 4.0. Do you know if the WJ you're looking at has the standard 4.7 (VIN should look like 1J4GW58N or 1J8GW58N) or the higher-output 4.7 (VIN should look like 1J4GW58J or 1J8GW58J)? I'm not sure if the higher-output ones (J in the VIN) had the same issues that the standard 4.7 (N in the VIN) did.

If you're going to be towing a boat or trailer, the 4.7, despite its problems at higher mileage, would be a good bet, but if you're not towing or towing something light (like a pop-up camper, for example), the 4.0 should work out fine for you and give you better MPG.

I own an '02 WJ Laredo 4X4 with a 4.0 and it's been very reliable.

Hope this helps,

Vince

2004 was the last yr of the 4.7HO engines which I suspect that it is as my 04 Overland edition has the same. Mine was a 2 owner but the second owner only had it for 6 mo. and his wife wanted a small car.

It had 202,000 on it when I bought it 6 yrs ago the original owner was a sales rep for the Western US and it had been serviced only ay Jeep dealerships all the time he owned it. If you can get the vin # on it and get a build sheet from Chrysler I had no idea of everything mine had on it that could not be seen. In 6 yrs 2 mo's ago had to have the exhaust manifold studs replaced on the drivers side that is the only thing that has been done other than regular service in that time.

I have other cars and trucks but this is my DD and all the wife drives in the winter in snow. On the highway it gets 19.7 mpg and averages 18.5 mpg city/highway. I use mine for a tow rig for my XJ on an all steel race car trailer and pulls with ease with ease, it does have the tow pkg. I found out after I bought it.

Here is the VIN: 1J4GW58N54C209579
The owner I am buying from is the original owner, bought new in 04 in California.
They just bought a new smaller/more economical SUV
it was always serviced and its so clean and in great shape!
I am paying him $3,000.00

how do I get the Jeep/chrysler build sheet?

There are several websites you can run the VIN thru and get it. Some are better than others. The one Fred used gives you the option codes whereas the one I used didn't.

Seems like the forums also automatically (or some admin) turned your VIN into a link to an integrated decoder. Didn't compare the two side by side, but it looks pretty thorough.
