There is so much on the internet about the 249 to 231 swap I am confused. I have the opportunity to get a tcase for nothing out of a 1990 Cherokee 4.0 auto. I need ti check if it is a 231. If so is that a direct bolt in? Also would I need dshafts from it or custom? If this will not work a friend told me that a GC 4.0 would be bolt in dshafts and all. so will start looking for that. I just did the 249 - 231 swap two weeks ago...about 6 hours start to finish...One problem you may run into is the input shaft length/gear cut/spline count that goes into the transmission from the tcase...check that link above me about the input shaft...there's like 5 million different ones and I'm not sure what your 95 would need...I had to use the rear drive shaft from the cherokee I got the 231 out of and reused the front driveshaft from my Jeep (cherokee front shaft is about 3 inches to short to go in the ZJ)

The only thing that wasn't a direct swap was the electronics for the VIC inside the Jeep to show what gear the tcase was in...but the 231 i got was from a 98 cherokee and the connectors were different not sure what they would be on the tcase you might get...I wasn't concerned about that working so i just taped off the connectors and called it a day lol
