That depends. If you are planning on just putting it straight into your vehicle, you should at minimum check the cylinders for signs of rust buildup on the walls. If it turns several full revolutions on the crank without getting stuck you should be fine. (take plugs out before turning so you aren't fighting compression).

The only real affect of being on its side is that whatever fluids are in it will have been sitting in a different spot and if intake and exhaust ports on the head were exposed, its possible for moisture and other contaminants to get into the cylinders.

Drain all the fluid, pull the heads and check for foreign fluids and corrosion.

I'd still tear it down. You can do it in a day and can save you from future headaches.

Upright, side, inverted are irrelevant compared to so many other factors will have a larger impact. The only real way to know is to inspect/test it. 3 months seems like a relative short time.

I agree with the tear-down suggestions. It's already out so inspecting or rebuild will be easy.

I'd want to look at the cylinders before doing anything else. pull the head and check it out.

How does it suck? That should be instinct for any used engine.

Simple, people really over hype tearing down a engine and make it seem harder than it is.

So much easier to do now then after it is in the vehicle and you find you have a problem.
