I was at a friends place, with a bulldozer onsite to get us unstuck if the need be... Also made an emergency pack, have a toolset in the jeep and a shovel. First time i took it offroad. I thought I was prepared... is there a safe place to hook up chains or cables in the front ?

Not really. Unless you have something tied into your unibody it's not a good idea to pull from forward...I've seen people hook up near lower control arm mounts bub that's something id never advise or do. Invest in proper recovery equipment.

Kevins Off Road sells a replacement lower radiator support that ties the front frame rrails together and has tabs so you can install D-rings. I have the kit on my 97 and love it.

That's what i did and bent the lower control arm pretty bad lol ! It looked like my only option at the time. I will be investing in some recovery equipment ! I am just surprised by the lack of this on a Jeep vehicle.

Some ZJ's came with front recovery hooks. You can find a set of OEM used but can be pricey as they aren't super common. You will have to remove the front bumper to install properly.
The jeep on the left has the hooks, you can see them just inside of the fog lights coming out of the slots in the lower bumper. The jeep on the right does not have them. I have also seen them on the rear, my ZJ doesn't have them on the rear, but there is a hitch.
