Um, I don't know much about the grands, but if its a manual which seems to be what your describing, your pretty much stuck with trans work. Could be worn out shifter forks. I would put some real thick oil in it if its a manual and that should remedy it to an extent, but not fix it or even solve it. It has just helped me with an XJ before.

Default Transmission issue in my 98 XJ 4.0 auto

Hello all, It's been a while and I'm hoping you can help guide me in the right direction for a fix.

At highway speeds anywhere between 60-80 mph, I am experiencing a sporadic "skipping" in the trans. The RPM will jump up as if it's heading into passing gear, stay there a minute, then drop back down to cruising RPM. I was thinking it might be some sort of sensor. Hubby says it feels like its an issue with the torque converter.

Any thoughts? My jeep has 213K miles on it. And, I wouldn't part with it for a second even with all its issues.

I'd check the throttle valve cable first (kick down cable) and make sure it's not out of adjustment.
(There's a button on the side you push and slide the cable in/out until the "hook " center is dead center with the pin (it slides on) dead center.
