I recently upgraded my XJ to a '96 ZJ. When working on it today I found this rather long power cord neatly rolled up and "hidden" in the engine bay. What is this for? I am not from the US so I do not recognise the plug, but it looks like some kind of power plug to me?

Exactly. In cold climates you plug it in at night and it keeps your coolant at about 100*F all night. Vehicle starts like Gangbusters in the morning. An absolute must for Alaska and Canada. That's a standard US 110v grounded power plug.
Power cord/plug in engine bay?
