Part time four wheel drive question

I read that I'm not supposed to drive on dry pavment while in part time four wheel drive. Can any damage be caused if I do? If so how much driving would it take? 1998 Grand Cherokee.

Engine: 4.0 with all of the noise and clatter

It can blow the transfer case all to hell, not sure how many miles it would take and I don't want to find out.

It will cause damage. How many miles before damage? I can't say. Why take a chance? It wasn't designed for that.
