It will probably make a mess, but stab a big *** screw driver through the side of the filter and use that as a handle to unscrew. I couldn't get the one off my new XJ, so I resorted to this caveman method.

Maybe try an oil filter wrench?

they make oil filter wrench "cups" get that or use a screwdriver like stated above. if you don't have much room get a smaller screwdriver. you should also be doing this from under the vehicle. not saying you werent just FYI

I tried the oil filter wrench but not much luck there wasn't enough room for the wrench the caveman method is what I went with and it was definitely not a clean procedure

I once had to change an oil filter someone had put ON with a wrench! They tightened it down until it stopped turning, completely flattening the gasket until it was metal-on-metal. I had to cut the can off at the gasket flange, bend the base plate away from the mounting surface, and then unscrew it. Luckily, it wasn't an aluminum mounting adapter or I probably would have broken it. In this instance, the caveman method just ripped the can to shreds.

I've had this happen before too. It really ruined my day.
