Default NP242 hole?

Hi, I have a 97 ZJ. A couple weeks ago while driving down the road at 60mph, the transfer case exploded(literally. There are parts of the case missing and it's in 2 pieces). I pulled another 242 out of a 98ZJ today. In doing so I noticed a small hole in the case that didn't have anything in it and there was nothing dangling or near it that looked like it would have fit in there. Does anyone know what this hole is for and what is supposed to plug into it?

I should mention that the part of the case on the old TC is missing to compare.

I want to put this case in today but not until I figure this out.

Thanks a ton!
Alan

It is an access hole to remove the pin that holds the shift shaft in place. I think there is supposed to be a plug in it but I'd have to do some research to see exactly is supposed to be in there. It should at least have a rubber plug to keep the fluid in and dirt out. There are several Youtube videos on how to rebuild jeep t/cases so you can check if you want, but I will if I have time later.
