Default NP 242 Transfer case not shifting

Hello, my name is Travis. I been trying to find a solution to my Jeep's problem for sometime but have not found much online for my specific problem. I tried probably 40 different google searches over the last year and have also spent time searching this forum. I am hoping someone else has some experience with my problem and get help send me off in the right direction to fix it.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 with a NP 242 transfer case. I am not exactly sure what happened but the 4wd stopped shifting completely a few years ago. It basically got stuck in 2wd. We tried forcing the shifter into gear and broke part of the plastic gear shifting assembly. So now I dont have a shifter to work with. Regardless the shifter was stuck because the cable wasn't going any where.

I can get under the car and manually shift into "part time" using a leverage tool to shift the range lever. It can shift back into 2wd from part time as well. So I know the 4wd works to some extent. It takes a good amount muscle to force it into "part time" then it takes to go back into 2wd. I fell like the problem lies in the linkage, lever or deeper in the transfer case. I also can't seem to find any info on what offers power to assist with the shifting. Like a vacuum line or solenoid. Seems odd the the shifting would rely completely on the force from the user shifting the gear shift ****.

When I get under that car everything looks normal to me, besides oil that has leaked from the bottom half of the transfer case. I have checked it's oil level and it was still filled the bottom of the hole for the fill screw.

I can't think of anything else to add. Thanks for you help.

-Travis

There are 2 fill bolts. You should have check fluid at top one.

Thanks, I may have to take it apart. Not what I was hoping to hear. It seems the linkage may be faulty because I can manually shift it.

It has oil up to the top fill hole. Thanks!!

This might help you out if you split your case. I had to split my 242 case also to do some work on the output shaft. There are some pictures of the prosses. Also Before you start get a good pair of LOCK RING pliers not snap ring pliers.
Hope this helps
