Not the same IAC issue as below.
The IAC in my wife's WJ is gone. I can not keep the jeep running without giving it gas. I went broke today buying parts for my XJ and I don't have $70 bucks for a new one. The local junkyards do not have WJ's at all. So my question is, is there really any difference between the IAC in a XJ, ZJ and a WJ or are they the same thing? Her WJ has the I-6 so I'm thinking they should be the same.

I don;t know, but have you tried cleaning it? I mean a really good cleaning. What i did was take brake cleaner and a cap from the can, and sprayed the cleaner into the cap slowly until it was filled up with cleaner. I then took the IAC and put it down into the center of the cap.
The cap was the perfect size and depth to submerge the IAC shaft in brake cleaner without getting it all up in the rest of the sensor.
I left it there for about 20 minutes, then wiped it down with a cloth. For me it wasn't quite clean enough yet, so i took some mothers mag polish, my dremel, and a polishing bit and worked at it for about 15 minutes. With it all pretty shiney i cleaned it down with brake cleaner again and put it back in.
Working perfectly again, and I had it out in the mud and rain all day today. Put about 3 tanks of gas through it since i did that last week and not a blip.

I did clean it but not very good. I went to clean it with carb cleaner, but when I went to clean it the aerosol was gone so I just wiped it down with a cloth. But it went from only having to hold the gas pedal down for about a minute, then it would run like there wasn't a problem. That was all week and then today I had to take it running around for parts for my jeep and it would not stay running without holding the gas. If I came to a stop sign or light It would idle at around 800 rpms for about 5 seconds and then drop inbetween 1-200 rpms and stall out. I got a new can of carb cleaner to clean it tomorrow and I'm going to test it with my multi-meter.

Are you sure it is not the TPS? I had a tiny crack in a wire going to my TPS and when i would mess around near there the idle would go insane a lot like what you are describing. I fixed it and until the IAC my idle was perfect.

No I didn't check the TPS. My TPS went out on the xj and it didn't cause any of this. When my TPS went my trans. wouldn't go out of first gear. I posted this on North American Grand Cherokee Association also. So if someone tells me that the IAC's are the same I'm going to the JY and pulling all the sensors form the throttle body.

If you start it up and then unplug the TPS you will see the idle skyrocket or plummet. The IAC controls the idle, but the TPS tells the computer where the position of the gas pedal is, and if it doesn't know you will get messed up idle.

Yes, that is correct. I do not have idle unless I give it gas if I take my foot off of the gas petal the idle drops and it stalls.
