Normal Operating Temp For 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4
Hey guys, i know there was already a tread posted ttalkin about "normal" operating temps for the Jeeps. But what is it for the 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredos 4x4s? Mine stays at 210 and a hair over and pretty damn close to 220. Is that normal?

Yes it's normal to run at 210 and a little hotter with a load, such as going up hill. Sitting still in traffic will cause the temp to rise too.

Sounds about right, yes. My OEM temp gauge moves up/down at around 190-210.. I use 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water.. radiator is 3yrs old, lower shroud left off as it was broken.
*When I first got it, the head gasket was blown and it leaked oil from everywhere possible; it was a "wreck"! After a couple months fixing it up, it's a very dependable dd.. everything on it works and no leaks anywhere. (yes, i'm proud ;-)
*One thing you might check.. I couldn't believe how much crap was in the ac condensor and old radiator fins. Condenser was almost totally blocking any air flow.. ez fix, remove it, blow it out, wash it out. No need to disconnect it, just separate it away from the radiator so you can blow the bugs 'n stuff out the front.
*I put it all back (with a new radiator) and was standing in front inspecting it for leaks etc. and it actually sucked my shirt up against the grille.. that's with just the clutch fan and no lower shroud.
*I'd say yours is about average. Those temp gauges aren't always real accurate. Man, do I like to type or what!?? ;-D Let's go outside and run over some stuff!

I believe there are 2 different thermostats that are acceptable for Jeeps, a 195* and a 210*. Whatever the operating temp of the thermostat is, this is the normal operating temp of the engine. If you live in a very hot climate, you can use the 195* stat. A 93 model is OBDI, so I don't think a 15* difference in op temp will make a difference with emissions.
I will agree that when it gets to about 220*, it gets a little worrisome. When it get above 230*, I pull over and let it cool, or turn the heater on and sweat!
As jkc said, check out your radiator's fins for insects and other debris.

The t-stat rating is not what the engine runs at. It's just the minimum temp the t-stat will open. I have a 195 in my ZJ, but it runs at a constant 210 at full operating temperature.

Busted's right. He's always there to contradict me when I'm wrong. Thanks, guy!
Point of fact. My brothers live in Florida. They tell me that they have a "love bug" problem at a certain time of the year. People put screens on the front of their cars so these bugs don't plug the radiators. I drove thru the orange country north of Orlando and ran thru swarms of honey bees. Even moths at night can plug your radiator. I once saw a guy that put an attic window screen in front of his radiator. That could be pulled out easily and cleaned.

If there were no numbers on the temp gauge, only a normal range like on most Fords, we would never worry about the temperature.

AGAIN, Busted's right. In most cases, if the needles are straight up, everything's normal. Back in the early 60's, GM cars only had a HOT light!
