Hi All,
I have a GC Limited AWD 4.0 1997, When driving there is a noise coming from the rear end. I dont think its wheel bearings as the noise dos'nt change pitch around corners...nor dos it change pitch when playing with the throttle.
Someone told me it may be Diff carrier bearings. If so is it possible to buy new shims & put them in. I've taken the diff cover off & there is no metal bits whatsoever in there.
I refilled the diff with 90w/140w and it did not seem to make any difference to noise.
Thanks for your time...
Alan

Youi are going to want to pull the diff apart, look at the bearings and measure the tolerances etc. Sounds like you are on the right track. Most of the time you have a bearing noise, looking at the bearing race will usually indicate a concern.

Got the same problem dude. I'm lookin' at having to replace my whole rear end. Put my ZJ in neutral and checked the drive shaft and it flops all over the place at the rear diff. Sucky.
