No overdrive
I recently got a '94 GC Laredo for the wife to get around safe in winter conditions. I got everything working except it will not shift into OD. It's a 4.0 L with a 42re (?).
I cycled it for the codes and got 55 for the trani and 12 / 55 for the engine (as had put new bat in it) thinking that engine code may be a lead as an issue for trani.
It shfts and runs ok otherwise but is a pig on fuel on the highway 12mi/gal
I have checked what I can but without wiring diagrams or what values any sensors etc should have I can't do much. I have googled every lead and had no obvious answers from that.
So I figured I join here as I'm sure someone here has the answer to where or what I need to do, check, etc with out spinning my wheels in the wrong direction.
Thanks,

Sounds to me to be a bad O/D solenoid. Check to see if the dash button got pushed. The indicator light may be burnt out.

One thing you might check is the brake light switch. It not only turns on your brake lights, it also unlocks the torque converter and kicks it out of OD. On mine the clip was cracked and let the switch get out of adjustment. I put a tiny hose clamp on the clip, adjusted the switch, and it's been fine for several years now. While cruising around 50mph, w/o letting off the gas, touch the brake pedal lightly with your left foot. You should see the difference in rpms. Just something to check before you get in to the tranny. Hope it's something simple.

Thanks I will check that out.
Wanted to eliminate all probable external options in a logical order before tearing into trani.

Sounds to me it's telling you your O/D light on the dash is burnt out or not connected to the trans controller. There may be a fuse involved. That's all I have.
I believe a code 12 is "start of test" and 55 is "test complete". Nothing in between means no codes are set. My wife's 96 Dodge Caravan was like that. So was my 89 Chevy truck.
