Default Newbie with a problem

Just looked a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee tonight and trying to make up my mind whether to buy it for a winter beater. Body is in decent shape, a bit of rust along the bottom of the doors and above the running boards, interior is good everything electrical works, drivers door key lock doesn't work, no major leaks, engine starts and runs fine.

Only problem is there is a crunching noise when it's moved forward or backward, the park gear won't engage. From what I've been reading online it sounds as if the transfer case may be damaged or the linkage may be out of adjustment, full time 4x4 and I didn't try putting it in 4 Low.

I have almost no experience with Jeeps, other than the military '67 pattern. I have owned and built chevy 4x4's in the past.

He only want's $300.00 for it so I'll probably end up taking a chance as the stereo is aftermarket and probably worth $200.00.

Any other ideas as to what the problem may be ?

If anything you could easily part that thing out for more than $300. Go for it. I'm jealous!

Thanks for the replies, will pick it up today or tomorrow am.

Looking forward to learning about these machines.

It will probably remain stock as most of my extra cash goes into my Charger but then I've said that before too.

Once you get a Jeep...you'll realize it's impossible. I lasted 3 months thinking I'd keep it stock...but...I gave in

That $300 ZJ will look great once you get done dumping the $3k+ in parts in it. It'll happen, just wait.

This is so true. As soon as i got it i put in a high output alternator, yellowtop optima and did a big 3 upgrade. Huge difference! now time for engine upgrades not to mention more audio to be installed.

Just my opinion, but your weakest link is the transmission. If you are willing to accept the possibility of rebuilding or replacing it, everything else is gravy. Luckily the vechicle is old enough to not have any electronic nightmares, so go with it. Just remember, if you really want to drive it, you've got a bunch of work cut out for you.

Like you, I graduated from Chevy 4X4's to Jeep and I should have done it sooner. What can I say; There is nothing like a Jeep! The Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4 was just too GD Big!

On the transmission, I attempted and completed rebuilding a THM 700R4 without any prior experience except watching my brother do two THM 350's. Not a piece of cake, but I did it.

Welcome to the forum. There is more information available here than you will find anywhere else. Whatever you plan to do, somebody has done it before!
