My 97 GC, 4.0L now has 120,820 mi on it- I got it just about a month ago with 118,000 on it.

Negative battery cable replaced, was causing my GC to shut down.
Throttle plate cleaned - service station said it was a mess.

I changed cap/rotor, plugs and wires yesterday. Runs very smooth now, and idles great at stops.

Here's the issue -
When the engine is cold, I start it up, wait about 10 seconds and leave. It's running great then at about 1/2 mile or so it loses engine power and stalls. I restart it, its running fine then about 1/2 mile again does same thing. I restart it and then its fine for the rest of day.

Any thoughts? or is it just a "Jeep thing"?? LOL

Id let it warm up a little longer and see what happens before you go tossing money at it. I cringe when people just fire it up first thing in the morning and drive like a bat outta hell. Try giving it 2-3 minutes.

 

Could be a clogged exhaust or a clogged fuel strainer in the tank. You need a vacuum gauge and a fuel pressure gauge to check those two issues out. Hook the vacuum gauge to a manifild vacuum source and the fuel pressure gauge up to the test port on the fuel rail, place them so you can watch them as you test drive the vehicle. If the vacuum guage starts to read pressure instead of vacuum, you have a clogged exhaust. If the fuel pressure starts to drop bellow 45 psi, you have a fuel pump module issue.

Yes, check engine light is on. Service station said 2 codes came up. Vacuum recovery system, but they think it was a gas cap issue, but will have it checked again. the other was a misfire of the number 5 cylinder, that's why I changed cap/rotor, plugs and wires.

Oh- and since changing cap/rotor, wires and plugs gas mileage around town went from mid 17's to high 18's and just under 21 on highway.
