Need Help: Problem while steering (WJ)
Hello,
I recently posted this to the cherokee chat forum. Then I realized that wasn't the smartest place to post it! The post is below. I'd appreciate any advice!
I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited. Sometimes when I steer, I hear a groaning noise. I am unable to hear if it is coming from the front or the back of the jeep. It seems to only happen when my jeep is cold (engine hasn't warmed up yet). Also, it never happens when I am in reverse. Has anyone had this problem before? Or does anyone know what might be up with it? I was thinking that it might be something with the power steering or even a CV joint. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help!

That is the first thing I checked. Levels are normal. I just got the jeep a few months ago so I can't say how long its been going on. It was a couple weeks after buying it that I noticed the noise/vibration. It will sometimes go a week or two without doing it. Then it seems like some weeks it does it 5 times or so within the same week. I can't find any consistancy in when it does it though.
I do have some experience with jeeps as I've had an XJ in the past. But I've never had such a problem in any of the vehicles I've had.

IMHO, your pump is worn and loosing pressure when cold. In reverse, there isn't as much strain on the pump, it's easier to turn the wheels because the caster settings tend to allow them to move more freely. It might just be the pressure control valve on the pump. these are on the discharge fitting and are easily replaced. Dodge Caravans had a problem with bad pumps about 2001 or so. Get someone to check Jeep service bulletins.
