More transmission problems, need help.

Default More transmission problems, need help.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0L and a 42RE with an NP231, the transmission was bad, I bought a new one (42RE) out of a totaled 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 4.0L, spent three weeks swapping it in, and problems.

symptoms (all after it has warmed up):

loud tick that gets faster and louder with more RPMs

Slips and shutters in reverse and drive

no shifting at all (i can put it in "2" and be in second but idk what it is in in drive, but over drive will not turn off, i even bought a new switch, at 55mph im going around 4500 5000 RPM in "2" when im in drive it turns 3000 at 55mph)

overdrive will not turn off

leaks from the pan when hot (no big deal i just need to take the pan off and clean the gasket material off and re seal it with rvt)

few second delay when i shift into drive or reverse followed by a harsh engagement


any help would be awesome, me and my dad swapped the transmission with a $10 socket set, a few screwdrivers, two wheel ramps, two 2 ton duralast jack stands and a tiny duralast jack.... it was not fun at all and we have zero desire to do it again, so any help would be awesome.

Anything? im at a severe loss, if i had the money id call it quits and try and get a new cherokee but i dont i need to get this one fixed..

yes i did.


but to update, the ticking went away, the clunking and slipping and shuttering went away for a day, i filled the fluid finally right and it all went away, but it decided to dump a few quarts on the ground and all the symptoms came back, so i managed to discover that all the symptoms were fluid related, now to figure out where its coming from,
i also discovered i need to take it in and get a TCM quick learn done to get it out of limp mode.

I know you don't want to hear this, BUT you should check the seal between the trans and the transfer case.

I had an experience with a GM trans with the NP transfer case where the trans would show low fluid level and the transfer case would be overfull and running out the breather. I believe Jeeps have a drain hole in the adapter section.

the leak was actually from the fill tube, i pulled it out, packed RVT in where the rubber gasket should have been, put it back filled it and boom no leaks its all good, now to come up with the $100 it costs to get the TCM quick learn done.

You know, that bushing is cheap and easy to replace, don't you? It goes into the trans FIRST, then install the tube.

Using RTV on a tranny is dangerous. Little pieces like to find their way into the most unlikely places.
